Therapy for pituitary gland issues, including tumors and deficiencies, often involves a combination of treatments like medication, surgery, and radiation therapy, tailored to the specific condition and patient needs.
1. Medications:
Hormone Replacement Therapy:
For hypopituitarism (underactive pituitary), medications are used to replace deficient hormones like cortisol, thyroid hormone, and sex hormones.
Medications for Tumors:
Dopamine agonists (e.g., cabergoline, bromocriptine): Often the first line of treatment for prolactinomas (tumors producing excess prolactin), shrinking the tumor and normalizing prolactin levels in many cases.
Somatostatin analogs (e.g., octreotide, lanreotide): Used for tumors producing excess growth hormone (acromegaly) or thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), reducing hormone production and sometimes tumor size.
Pegvisomant: Blocks the effects of excess growth hormone.
